Learning Big Words For Fun !

While turning pages in my dictionary I ran into some words that I would like to discuss. Here they are:
l. lobotomy- a surgical incision in a lobe of the brain. As I was watching an old John Wayne movie I began to sleep. When I awoke I had a headache. My wife did a lobotomy to my brain without asking permission.
2. seedy- rundown, shabby. My clothes are seedy. Someday I will have to check out the goodwill store again.
3. slather- to cover or spread on thickly. I like to slather a lot of mustard on a sandwich. After slathering shaving cream on my face, our cats will sit and watch me shave.
4. sleuth- detective. Sleuths or a dime a dozen at any police station. I was cooking pan cakes when a sleuth knocked on my door. The sleuth drank a milk shake with me and we watched cartoons, played pool, we went swimming, fishing, hunting, skating, and hang gliding, and then he arrested me for eating noodles on Monday, licking a stolen postage stamp on Tuesday, and for removing seeds from my slice of watermelon on Wednesday. Strange fellow!
5. provoke- to anger or irritate. I was swimming in the Amazon river when I began provoking the crocodiles. Joann provoked them with me. Both of us stuck our tongues at them, and then Joann put one gator in a head lock. The gator bit her ear and would not let go. I struck the gator with my flipper and then Joann and I wrestled it under the water. Then my mother-in-law provoked a gator and got bit in the butt.
6. brain dead- to have no brain function. I felt brain dead today so I ate a corn dog and played my harmonica.
7. Swiss cheese- cheese with holes in it. I was walking down the street when gangsters filled me with holes like Swiss cheese.
8. exiguous- meager, scanty. My sandwich of baloney had and an exiguous amount of mayonnaise, tomato and lettuce.
9. plebeian- a vulgar coarse person. I took my girl friend skating and then I tried to put a smooch on her and she punched me in the nose and called me a plebeian bum.
10. semantics- the study of the meaning of words. We got goose bumps studying semantics because of words like werewolf, Dracula, mummy, corpse, evil, big bad wolf, witch, Pumpkin Head, dreadful, and rats butt.
Thank you for reading my hub. God Bless you

What a great idea. Advertise to teachers - we are always looking for fun ways to introduce new vocab. Add a photo with each word as research shows children learn more effectively if learned with an image :)
